For the Love of the Game

If you’re following the Olympics of 2016 you’ve no doubt come across the champion stories – from every-day beginnings to wild success.

Among them is Katie Ledecky’s: a 19 year old from Maryland who it seems has a thing for shattering limits. I watched her last night and sat slack-jawed as she outpaced her fellow competitors by at least a body length– a huge margin for an Olympian. She smashed her own world record swimming the 400 meter freestyle in 3 minutes and 56 seconds, outshining her competition and moreover, her own score and world record by 2 whole seconds.

Always ready to learn from the masters, I can’t help but question how these Olympians turn their human bodies into world record breaking machines. “How did they get here?” I ask at least 25 times as I watch glued to the history that’s taking place. And it seems that at least one element to their success is to simply have fun.

Can you have fun while you’re pushing past limits that seem terrifying, punishing, impossible even? According to Katie, it’s not just possible; it’s essential.

In an interview with Matt Lauer she remarked, “I enjoy the hard work. I enjoy the dedication that I need to put in. I enjoy seeing the progress and having fun with my teammates. That’s what it’s all about. It’s sport. It shouldn’t be any different than a little 6 year old starting to swim. It should be just as fun as it was then.”

To have a 6 year old, ear-to-ear smiling kind of time crushing your next goal? To bring heartfelt joy and child-like wonder to your task? Wow!

Her words remind me to find the love in what I do. No matter what. And it’s fun just to imagine the possibilities: What if you married ultimate drive with passion? Mixed delight with extreme goal setting? What would it look like if you chose not to settle for a single thing in life and instead established a mindset that works to bring you abundance, beauty and joy? What if you never let anything hold you back?

These kids who learn to overcome Fear, teens who manage their emotions on a global stage, mothers who jump back in the ring after childbirth and the veterans who defy the limits of age – to them I humbly bow and give honor.

Thankful for the inspiration and the reminder that with determination and a true love of what you do, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE.
